This is an introductory session to help teachers learn: 1. What types of tasks we use & How we form collaborative groups, 2. Where we work, and 3. How we answer questions in a thinking classroom. If you are unfamiliar with BTC, come find out about the impact it can have in your classroom!
This activity will be a hit with your students because it's quite competitive. Like a fantasy draft, each team selects a draftee; however, they have no idea if their election is correct until the end of the draft. The draft can circulate several rounds, but four rounds seems to work the best. Groups all have the same draft cards, but as groups draft, their draft numbers are removed. Toward the end, it's a little cut throat. The team with the highest number of correct draft picks win. In our PD, we can brainstorm with any subject area to see how this would work. Come prepared to discuss topics/options then we can has out the details together.

Teachers will understand what exit tickets are and their purpose. Teachers will design a variety of exit tickets for varied subjects and analyze student responses to improve instruction.
In this session, teachers will define productive struggle; differentiate between productive struggle and frustration; discuss the benefits of productive struggle; and both collaborate and learn best practices that promote a productive struggle in the classroom. This session is best for teachers whose courses include both reading and writing instruction.
We will focus on finding authentic resources for interpretive communication(reading and/or listening comprehension)and how those can be scaffolded for each level. I will give an overview of the types of authentic sources (menus, commercials, songs, movies, poems, books, etc) and how those can be incorporated into the classroom. I will also open the floor for the last 10-15 minutes of the session for group brainstorming of resources by language.

With Visible Thinking, I am only going to focus on one or two of the reading strategies with the main one being “CSI (Color, Symbol, Image). This is a strategy any grade level could use and incorporate in their lesson and it doesn’t take that much time to do. I will attach the template I will be using, as well, to give you a better idea as to what I am describing. The other Visible Thinking strategy, if I introduce a second one, I have not totally decided on it, as of yet. There are so many and I’m trying to only decide on the ones that are less time consuming and the most beneficial. However, CSI, focus on the students providing a color for a text, coming up with a symbol to represent what has been read, and creating an image of that text (the first image that comes to mind from the text). No words can be used, only the CSI, and the student will verbal explain why that color or those colors were chosen, why that symbol and image.
My plan is to begin by showing attendees how to access the tn.gov website, and the information they can find there about writing. I'lll show the rubrics for grade 2-5 and genres of writing. Next I'll discuss ways to use the rubrics for students to evaluate their own writing.
